So, this was an idea that I was having earlier in the day. I had been doodling / drawing a concept on paper and decided to use a smaller canvas to try and convey that into a painting. Originally the grass went all the way across the bottom, but a handy dandy palette knife and some determination scraped it all off, and the idea for the waterfall was born. I had never attempted a waterfall before, especially as a late edition (Happy Accident). It’s a pretty painting. Made me smile… that counts!

Afternoon Thrice

Painting 4.2 – Afternoon Thrice – 18×24 Gallery Wrapped Canvas. Painted on 4/3/2020

This is the final installation of the Triple Oil Challenge. My wife claimed this painting for herself. I’ve managed to go from a blocky silhouette with Yoda feeding a woodpecker, to this. These all make me happy, and that’s what its all about!

Afternoon Pond Series – Afternoon Deux

Painting 4.1 – Painted on March 27th, 2020. My first day off on our new work schedule.

This is the second in the Afternoon Pond Series. If you haven’t heard of the Afternoon Pond Series (Hereafter referred to as APS), that’s because it was spur of the moment. I had kicked around one time about doing 3 of each painting, For those that didn’t know it, when Bob Ross painted on the Joy of painting in the 80’s and early 90’s, he painted three of each tv series painting. The first, was signed Kowalski, dedicated to Bob’s friend who got him a start and helped him build a legacy. It was this painting that would sit off camera when Bob would paint his masterpiece. The second one was labeled “Show”. It’s the one we all get to watch him paint. Afterwards, he would paint a third painting labeled “Book”. These paintings included the most detail as they were used in Bob’s Joy of Painting Instructional Books. So by emulating the Perm King Himself, I can get three paintings, hopefully from meh to WOW! I’ve enjoyed the Triple Oil Challenge. Give it a Try! #TripleChallenge

P.S. This Painting was chosen by my Dad as the one he liked the best. It now hangs in his home.

Afternoon Pond

This is #4. Based on a photo from our farm pond. I painted this one for my dad! He was excited when he saw it. As it turns out, he chose the second of this series as his painting and has it prominently displayed! So… Yoda and the Woodpecker are just hanging around.

18 x 24. Oil on Canvas.
As my wife said… It’s Yoda feeding a Woodpecker!

Nowhere Land

So… It’s been 5 days since I vaped. I took up vaping to help me quit smoking several years ago. On Monday March 9th, I clicked 5 times and the display went out on my device for the last time. I needed something bright and cheerful to pick up my spirits, and Nowhere Land was born. #StayStrong

“In painting, you have unlimited power. You have the ability to move mountains. You can bend rivers. But when I get home, the only thing I have power over is the garbage.”

– Bob Ross

Recently, I’ve had the privilege of a great comment. This painting was likened to the works of the Group of Seven, more specifically the works of Lawren Harris. Landscapes with a more abstract / cartoonish look to them. Thank you very much!

Meteor Mountain

Painted on March 8th, 2020.

So, this was my spin on Peaceful Reflections. After about 3 Hours, my back became extremely unhappy. By the time I had signed the painting, I had to lean on a step ladder because I was unable to stand upright. Perhaps an anti-fatigue mat would be beneficial. I am contemplating sitting for anything below the horizon.

New Art Coming Today!

I am working on a new piece today, Bob Ross (Season 15, Episode 4) Peaceful Reflections. This will be my first painting with a mountain. Ok, maybe not the first one, but the first one done in oil paints. I plan to photograph the canvas at various points along the way and include a gallery once I complete it. Are you planning to paint or do something creative today? Do It!

First Thoughts

After completing my first wet on wet “Alla Prima” Bob Ross style painting, I have learned several things.

  • If you’re contemplating giving it a try, don’t wait for all the conditions to be “perfect”.
  • Jump in with both feet and go for it!
  • Bob completes a whole painting in roughly 27 minutes, nearly the amount of time it took me to prep the palette with the colors. My painting took approximately 2.5 Hours.
  • Bob has a slew of brushes at the ready, Multiple Fans, Large Landscape brushes, 1″ landscapes, etc. I had one of each, so where he doesn’t spend a lot of time cleaning brushes, I became a master of it. This takes time.
  • Beating the devil out of the brush is fun, and it also is a great way to re-decorate your workspace. Make sure if your doing this that the splatter doesn’t get on your painting. (this didn’t happen to me but it has potential to be an issue). For less than $20 you can get a trashcan from your local store, get a small basket from the kitchen area like something you sit in a sink. Push the wire basket into the trashcan so it sits at the bottom, with the bottom of the rack facing up. You now have a nice contained brush beating area. If you get the trashcan with the lid, it will contain most all of the smell.
  • Odorless Paint Thinner isn’t exactly Odorless. Regardless of the name, the aromatic components of the stuff actually smell bad. If the fragrance offends you, May I suggest Gamblin Gamsol. It has 100% of the aromatics removed, and it smells no different than water. Works great, and will help those of you who suffer from Asthma or other breathing related issues.
  • When loading the palette knife, different effects are achieved from loading the knife correctly. For laying the snow on the mountains, the paint is “rolled” on the “Bottom” edge of the knife. This allows the top down method of applying the paint so it breaks “leaves little gaps”, allowing the base color of the mountain to show through. Water lines are generally painted by loading the “TOP” edge of the knife. I’ll post some pictures of this with a little more detail sometime later.
  • A typical oil painting takes a LONG time to dry, resist the urge to touch it somewhere that looks dry, it isn’t. You’ll only end up with unsightly fingerprints on your painting. I painted mine on 2-22-20, a week later some spots were still wet.

You too, can make beautiful things happen on canvas… Bob Ross

Until Next Time…

Psychedelic Sea

#1. My First Oil Painting – Psychedelic Sea – 18×24 Gallery Wrapped Canvas
Painted – February 22, 2020

This currently hangs behind my chair in the gaming room. The first ever oil painting I attempted. My wife said that one of those clouds looked like it could get someone pregnant. And that Voldemort was catching his broom.
