Mount Somewhere

This was my attempt to re-create an episode of the Joy of Painting. Specifically, Season 14, Episode 1, Distant Mountains. Painted on August 14th, 2020. Took me nearly two hours. This is waaaay down from how long they used to take. I am more comfortable with the tools and techniques now, so I am continuing to improve with each painting. Perhaps I should entertain the notion of leaning on having a seat. My back begins to flare pain after 2+ hours, Maybe a fatigue met would help, the floor is solid concrete in my studio space. Any suggestions? I usually have to sign the painting later in the day, or even the next day because the back pain prevents me from stooping over to sign it.

I know what you’re thinking… I mean, after looking at it as we sometimes must do with art, that’s a small price for a large painting. I’ve seen formulas for art prices and I must say they all seem so inflated. Happy Accidents!

America – Mountains of Freedom

America – Mountains of Freedom – #10 – 4-22-2020 – 12×16 Oil On Canvas – SOLD

I painted this as a Patriotic Salute to a great friend who had served our country in the Navy. I told him my idea was abstract, but I believed we could pull it off. He was thrilled! Maybe one day I’ll redo this one onto a larger canvas.

Peaks Pass

Peaks Pass – April 16th, 2020 – 18×24 Oil on Gallery Wrapped Canvas

I’m really getting some good knife work into this painting. I have finally started to be at ease with my palette knife, and have tried to make it a good friend as Bob would say. Originally, this happy scene started out as Gray Mountain, but once I made that distant set of mountains, I was so excited I went ahead and painted the foreground range as well. Got a little zealous with my new found mountain skills I decided for a nice quaint green meadow… Which obviously never quite happened.

I had to fill in the gap on right with something tall, so evergreens were a good choice. I haven’t yet tried using the 2″ brush to make trees. Also, needed a tree on the left of the then grassland. Then I needed bushes. Though colorful, they are sad little bushes. Certainly there is a secret to their adhesion. Perhaps my paint is simply not thin enough, it never exits the bristles with Bob’s “organic” look to it. Any one care to comment on how I can achieve the happy little bush effect?

Overall, It’s a happy little painting that makes me smile! That’s all that matters!

Additionally, This was painted on what would have been my mothers 77th Birthday. My mother passed on July 20, 2017. She is missed daily; this painting was born from pain and grief, but lives to be a beauty of the wall.
